A pump that fails offshore rarely fails without warning. Most failures trace back to a step that was skipped, rushed, or assumed to be fine because it was fine last time. Before any pump goes back into service, a structured pre-deployment check is what separates a planned maintenance window from an unplanned one at sea.

Pre-deployment inspection

Start with a walk-around before any tools come out. Look for external corrosion, cracked mounting feet, loose guards, and signs of previous leaks around the casing joint. A pump that "looks tired" usually is — visual condition is a genuine, if informal, leading indicator of internal wear.

Pump casing

Check the casing for cracks, pitting, and erosion around the volute, particularly near the discharge. Confirm casing bolts are torqued to specification and that gaskets or O-rings show no compression set or chemical attack. A casing that has been over-torqued or under-torqued in the past will often show uneven gasket wear.

Shaft and bearings

Rotate the shaft by hand where possible and feel for roughness, binding, or axial play beyond the manufacturer's tolerance. Bearings should be checked for correct lubrication type and quantity — over-greasing is as damaging as under-greasing, since it raises operating temperature. Listen and feel for unusual heat or noise once the pump is briefly run under safe conditions.

Mechanical seals

Mechanical seals are one of the most common sources of offshore pump downtime. Inspect seal faces for scoring, check spring tension where visible, and confirm the seal flush or quench system (if fitted) is connected and functioning. Any history of dry-running should trigger a seal replacement rather than a reuse decision.

Couplings

Check coupling alignment between pump and driver — misalignment accelerates bearing and seal wear even when the coupling itself looks undamaged. Inspect flexible elements for cracking or compression set, and confirm guard covers are secure before start-up.

Lubrication

Confirm the correct lubricant grade is in use for the operating environment, and check oil levels, condition, and any signs of water contamination — a real risk in offshore and marine settings. Cloudy or discoloured oil is a signal to investigate before deployment, not after.

Suction and discharge connections

Confirm suction piping is free of air leaks, since even small ones can introduce cavitation risk once the pump is running. Check strainers or foot valves are clear, and that discharge piping is properly supported so pump flanges aren't carrying pipe weight.

Valves

Isolation and check valves should open and close fully without sticking. A check valve that doesn't seat properly can allow backflow that damages the pump on shutdown, so this is worth confirming even if the pump itself passes every other check.

Pressure testing

Where practical, pressure test the system at a safe, controlled level before full deployment, watching for pressure drop that indicates an internal or external leak. This is especially important after any seal, gasket, or casing work.

Electrical and hydraulic drive checks

For electrically driven pumps, check insulation resistance, terminal connections, and motor condition. For hydraulically driven units, check hose condition, fitting torque, and hydraulic fluid cleanliness — contaminated hydraulic fluid is a common root cause of premature pump wear offshore.

Spare parts

Documentation

Safety checks

Finally, confirm guards are fitted, lockout/tagout procedures are followed during inspection, and that anyone starting the pump for a test run is briefed on the isolation points. No inspection step is worth a safety shortcut.
